“That was unfortunate. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
Jones additionally emphasized that the gesture was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently done. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Recent examples involve:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
